With new strides in dental technology making themselves known every day, from Waterpiks to whitening mouthguards, it can be hard to keep up on the latest, chic and new dental trends. By now though, you have likely come across some ad, article, or overheard a conversation revolving around tongue scrapers & cleaners. Why all the ado over what sounds like a pretty straightforward device? Well, we dig into just that in our article.

What Is A Tongue Scraper, Exactly?

A tongue scraper as you can probably imagine is a device used to help clean your tongue. Tongue scrapers are sold in a variety of sizes, shapes, and designs and primarily function by starting at the back of the tongue and gently dragging the scraper forward. Some people choose to clean their tongue by using their toothbrush as well.

It's been theorized that cleaning your tongue regularly helps you maintain fresh, clean-smelling breath but there is no actual evidence that brushing or scraping your tongue to anything to prevent bad breath or improve chronic bad breath problems like halitosis. In fact, bad breath and mouth bacteria are capable of growing back just as fast you remove it making it a nearly impossible task.

It can be a great way to go the extra steps for your mouth but truly comes down to personal preference and is not a necessary step when dealing with your oral hygiene. Be sure to keep your eye out for any new products like these that may be hitting the Coral Nano shelves before you know it! Don't get too excited though.
